Sachin Tendulkar got to his fifth double-century in Test match cricket when he converted his 48th century in Tests into a huge innings. It was the fourth day second Test match at the SSC in Colombo, and in partnership with Suresh Raina, Tendulkarís double century ensured that the Indians were in no trouble by the time tea was taken on the fourth day.

At tea on the fourth day, India was 589/5 and only 53 runs behind the Sri Lankan score of 642/4, with the game heading towards a sure draw on a rather flat track.

The 200 was Tendulkarís fifth in his career, after his innings against New Zealand, which was followed by one against Zimbabwe in Nagpur, Bangladesh at Dhaka and Australia in Sydney. All the games except the one against Bangladesh had ended in draws.

Earlier, Raina had also got to his century, which was a maiden century on Test match debut, ensuring that he joined eight other Indians to make a ton in the first Test innings.
