Nemanja Vidic will begin pre-season training this week... before his Manchester United team-mates return to work. The Serbian centre-back has not played since damaging cruciate knee ligaments in the Champions League clash with Basel in December. But he has made rapid progress with his rehab over recent weeks. So staff at United’s Carrington training base have made plans for him to start his fitness sessions before his team-mates get back from their summer hols. The Red Devils begin pre-season training on Monday with Euro 2012 players getting an extended break. Vidic, 30, is running without trouble again and has been on a special programme to improve his core strength. United’s medical team will assess him before giving the all-clear to play.

Elsewhere, The Sun run an exclusive interview with Rio Ferdinand, which focusses largely on England's Euro 2012 exit. Rio admitted he was disappointed United team-mate Phil Jones didn't get a kick in the tournament and said the Three Lions looked best when Danny Welbeck dropped deep to collect the ball and link the play. "I want [England] to get Danny on the ball more like he does for United."

The "winter break" issue has reared its head again, with The Telegraph claiming the topic will be raised the next time the Football Association board meet. Henry Winter writes: "Contrary to popular perception, the Premier League is not averse to a winter break [although] It wants to retain the traditional Christmas and Bank Holiday fixtures."
