Australia captain Ricky Ponting has said that he hoped that series against India will be the start of their quest to reclaim the number one ranking in Test matches. Australia is right now at the number four position, while India is the top side. The difference between the two sides is 14 points.

Speaking to the media before departing for India, Ponting said that it was a vital tour before the start of the Ashes, and that he expected a very high level of performance over the next few weeks.
India had won the last time Australia was in India, 2-0 over a four match series. Before that, on the tour of Australia, India had lost 1-2. Australia will stand to gain ten points if they win this series 2-0.
Ponting also said that the ICC must do everything possible to root out the match-fixing scandal from the game.
Earlier, India announced their team for the first Test match against Australia at Mohali from October 1.
