Federico Macheda's return to Manchester United will be another whistle-stop visit with a further season-long loan on the cards. The young Italian, 20, has failed to make the breakthrough at Old Trafford despite his memorable debut winner against Aston Villa three years ago, which helped fire the Reds to the title. Since then, he has had loan spells at Sampdoria and QPR, where he spent two months last term before an ankle injury cut short his stay. Now United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will make him available to a Championship club again once he holds talks with the striker about his future. The failure to sell on 31million Bulgarian hitman Dimitar Berbatov who is preparing to see out the remaining year of his contract means Macheda is now fifth in the attacking pecking order at United.

All of the newspapers carry quotes from Thursday's press conference including Sir Alex's assertion that Darren Fletcher will still have a role at the club if he fails in his bid to recover full fitness. Many of the stories suggest the Scot's career is hanging in the balance.

The Independent's Jack Gaughan was impressed by Shinji Kagawa's introduction, writing a piece under the heading: 'Charm, talent, cheeky grin Kagawa's United love affair begins.' Gaughan explained: "It was clear to see the midfielder, on looking at the packed press room and answering questions, knew he had arrived and that this was his destiny. Looking at him taking all this in, you sensed someone special might be embarking on a love affair with the Premier League."
