It was intended to be Boxing Day, not Boxing Australia Anywhere in the Ears Day. Within three sessions of complete England prominence at the MCG, they went to within stirring distance of keeping the Ashes by dissolving Australia for 98 and going through their total with no wickets down, leaving Ricky Ponting needing a late Christmas miracle to avoid heading Australia to three Ashes series losers.
Chris Tremlett and James Anderson picked up four wickets each, assisting Andrew Strauss's determination to send the hosts in, before Strauss and Alastair Cook expressed that with discipline, batting was n't that difficult on a pitch with a bit juice in it.
The day could just have gone best for England, who finished at 0 for 157 with Strauss on 64, Cook on 80, a hefty first-innings advantage in chance and a 2-1 series lead on the view.
