    Default India's mineral sector grows by 7.92pc

    The mineral production from mining and quarrying sector in October 2009 was higher by 8.25pc compared to that of the preceding month. However, the mineral sector has shown a positive growth of 7.92pc during the current financial year i.e. April- October 2009-10 as compared to that of the previous year.

    The mineral production in October 2009 was higher by 8.13pc as compared to that of the corresponding month of previous year, said a government statement Monday.

    The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic and minor minerals) in the country during October 2009 was Rs. 8817 crore.

    The contribution of coal was the highest at Rs. 3379 crore (38pc ). Next in the order of importance were: iron or Rs. 1650 crore, petroleum (crude) Rs. 1590 crore, natural gas (utilized) Rs. 1237 crore, lignite Rs. 215 crore and limestone Rs. 233 crore. These six minerals together contributed about 94pc of the total value of mineral production in October 2009.

    Production level of important minerals in October 2009 were: coal 425 lakh tonnes, lignite 26 lakh tonnes, natural gas (utilized) 3976 million cu. m., petroleum (crude) 29 lakh tonnes, bauxite 860 thousand tonnes, chromite 248 thousand tonnes, copper conc. 11 thousand tonnes, gold 163 kg., iron ore 160 lakh tonnes, lead conc. 12 thousand tonnes, manganese ore 169 thousand tonnes, zinc conc. 112 thousand tonnes, apatite and phosphorite 110 thousand tonnes, dolomite 432 thousand tonnes, limestone 185 lakh tones, magnesite 23 thousand tones and diamond 1390 carats.

    In October 2009, the output of apatite and phosphorite increased by 55.85pc , coal 15.14pc , lead conc. 9.30pc , manganese ore 8.6pc natural gas (utilized) 8.52pc , iron ore 7.47pc , limestone 6.31pc , dolomite 6.04pc , lignite 5.91pc , petroleum (crude) 3.03pc , copper conc 2.69pc , zinc conc. 0.52pc and magnesite 0.37 percent. However, the production of bauxite decreased by 2.06pc , gold 2.98pc chromite 7.68pc and diamond 9.15 percent
