Red face Seven things that add extra calories to your diet

Coffee Maybe it’s time to settle for just a plain cup of joe. Fancy caffeinated beverages are often high in fat, sugar and calories. A Starbucks’ Venti White Mocha with whole milk and whipped cream contains 620 calories and 27 grams of fat, according to The Centre for the Science of Public Interest, a consumer advocacy group with offices in Ottawa and Washington. If you have to have your caffeine fix in the morning, at least trade the whole milk for skim and definitely lose the whipped cream.

Alcohol Here’s a fact that’ll bring the party down: a glass of wine with dinner can add anywhere from 100 to 150 extra calories to dinner. And beer isn’t any better - a glass of beer will add anywhere from 150 to 200 calories. A few drinks with friends can easily turn into an entire meal worth of calories, if you’re not careful

Meat Trim the fat by choosing extra lean meat (95% lean) over regular meat (70% lean), and you’ll make a healthy strike against excess calories, says Dr. John Berardi, chief science officer of Precision Nutrition Inc. and co-author of Gourmet Nutrition. “A 100g serving of extra lean beef is only 110 calories versus 330 calories for regular fat beef,” explains Berardi

Dried Fruit Dried fruit, which is high in sugar, may be another calorie trap. Four of those little dried prunes or apricots have the same calorie count as a single apple. “By snacking on dried prunes or apricots, you can easily sneak calories into your diet without even knowing it,” explains Berardi. Sub in frozen or fresh fruit to reduce your sugar intake.

Bagels According to the National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute (NHBLI) in the U.S., bagels have doubled in size and calories in the past two decades. Once upon a time, a bagel was roughly three inches in diameter and 140 to 200 calories. Today it’s twice that and contains roughly 350 calories. If you can’t find the old fashioned three-inch bagel at your local grocery store, opt for rye toast—it’s a steal at 70 calories a slice.

Salad Dressing Salads are great, but heavy dressings are not. Too much dressing on your healthy salad can easily increase the calorie content of your meal by 50% or more if you’re not careful, explains Berardi. Store bought dressings like Ranch and Balsamic vinaigrette can easily add almost 100 calories to your salad. Make your own simple dressing with a heart healthy fat like olive oil, garlic and apple cider vinegar, or dress your salads sparingly paying close attention to the nutritional information on the label.

Potato Chips Snack attacks are common to calorie-deprived dieters. But they’re also a quick way to undermine your weight loss goals, adding hundreds of extra calories in a few short mouthfuls. Roughly 20 plain potato chips can add more than 220 calories to your daily intake. Compare that to the vitamin-rich and 80-calorie apple or the small yogurt cup (roughly 180 calories), which is a good source of daily protein.
