    Follow us on Social Media

Terror struck Mumbai when three serial blasts rocked crowded areas in Zaveri Bazar, Dadar and the Opera House on Wednesday evening. According to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, at least 17 people were killed and 81 others injured in the serial blasts.

In New Delhi, the Union Home Ministry said the multiple explosions were a terror strike and that Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) were used. Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh said two people were killed and about 100 injured in three explosions.

Police said the nature and intensity of the explosions were not known but the blasts revived memories of the terror attack in November 2008 in which 166 persons were killed by 10 gunmen of Pakistan-based terror outfit LeT.

Police said all the three blasts took place in a crowded markets and busy areas.

The first explosion took place in south Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar, near famous Mumbadevi temple, this evening in which some people were injured, said Mumbai Police spokesperson Nisar Tamboli. The bustling market also has a number of jewellery shops.

The second explosion was reported in a taxi in Dadar area, he said. The site of the explosion was close to dadar railway station.

“We are verifying the nature of explosions. At this moment I cannot say anything more than this,” Mr. Tamboli said.

Three blasts rocked Mumbai'scrowded Zaveri Bazar, Opera House and Dadar Kabootarkhana areas on Wednesday evening, killing 10 and injuring at least 100 people.

Mumbai Police sources say the Indian Mujahideen is suspected to be behind the attack. In Delhi , Home Ministry sources too say that the hand of the IM working closely with the Lashkar-e-Tayiba is suspected.

The first explosion took place at south Mumbai's Zaveri Bazaar, near the famous Mumbadevi temple, in which scores were injured, said Mumbai Police spokesperson Nisar Tamboli.

The injured in this blast have been rushed to G T Hospital in Kalbadevi area.

The bustling market also has a number of jewellery shops.

Akshay Doshi, a commuter, told rediff.com, "I was at the traffic signal opposite Zaveri Bazar. The blast was like nothing I have heard before. I saw many injured being carried away."

Senior police officers including Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik, Additional Commissioner Naval Bajaj and Joint Commissioner Rajneesh Seth were present at the blast site.

Also present were members of the Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad and a forensic team.

The second explosion was reported in a car in central Mumbai's Dadar area.

The vehicle parked near the Dadar Hanuman Mandir bus stop was a private vehicle. The blast at Dadar, according to ACP Madhukar Sankhe, has taken place inside the meter box on the bus stop and the car was parked near it. The number of the grey car is MH-43 A 9384. The entire bus stop has been reportedly blown up

Default IB had warned of possible attacks in Mumbai

As the investigations into the serial blasts progress, it becomes clear that the police were caught napping despite warnings and alerts from the Intelligence Bureau over the past couple of months.

Intelligence Bureau intercepts suggested that the Indian Mujahideen has been making desperate attempts to strike back. First they made an attempt just before the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and then an attempt was made at Varanasi. The most recent one was at the Delhi high court. In all these cases the explosions were of low intensity. Barring the Varanasi blasts in all other incidents the detonators had malfunctioned, but on Tuesday they seem to have got it right.

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday condemned the three bomb blasts in India's financial hub of Mumbai that killed at least two persons and injured scores.

"President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, the government and the people of Pakistan have condemned the blasts in Mumbai and expressed distress on the loss of lives and injuries," said a statement issued by Foreign Office spokesperson Tehmina Janjua.

"The President and the Prime Minister have expressed their deepest sympathies to the Indian leadership on the loss of lives, injuries and damage to property in Mumbai," Janjua said.

No group claimed responsibility for the blasts, which coincided with the birthday of Ajmal Kasab the lone surviving member of a group of 10 Pakistani terrorists who attacked Mumbai in November 2008 and killed 166 people.

Kasab, born on July 13, 1987, has been convicted and sentenced to death for his role in the attacks.

Default Home grown jihad, external bomb maker

Investigators believe that an external hand helped make the bombs used in the three Mumbai blasts on Wednesday evening.

Initial investigations point towards the bombs being assembled by a professional. But with the top bomb makers of the Indian Mujahideen, which is the prime suspect at the moment, under custody in police stations across the country, investigators are examining the possibility of a bomb maker from outside the country being involved in this attack.

The IM-Lashkar-e-Tayiba link appears to be the strongest right now, with all leads pointing towards the two outfits.

The IM had at least 10 expert bomb makers. While a couple of them are away from the country, the rest are in custody. As a result, the IM has been erring with their bombs.

Default Hospitals struggle to cope with blast victims

Chaos reigned at various hospitals in Mumbai with over 80 injured people being rushed for treatment after serial bomb blasts rocked the metropolis on Wednesday evening.

Most of those wounded were taken to JJ, St George, GT, KEM and Harkishandas hospitals as the medical staff scrambled to tackle the sudden medical emergency.

Several of them were referred from one hospital to another after they failed to secure a place due to large number of victims pouring in from the blast sites at Dadar, Zaveri Bazaar and Opera House.

People queued up at hospitals to verify whether their friends or relatives were among the injured, while some were seen donating blood and helping hospital authorities.

The jinx associated with number '13' seems to hold true for the country with four bomb blasts taking place on this date during the last three years.

Mumbai's diamond district Zaveri Bazaar and two other bustling markets Opera and Dadar were hit by three consecutive blasts, killing at least 13 and injuring about 100 on Wednesday, July 13.

On February 13 last year, 17 people were killed and over 60 injured when the famous German Bakery in Pune was hit by a bomb blast. The bakery which was frequented by foreigners came under attack a day before Valentine's Day when young crowd throng the eatery.

In May 13, 2008, Jaipur was hit by a series of nine synchronised bomb blasts within 15 minutes across different locations of the 'Pink City'.

The blasts -- first terror attack on this tourist destination -- killed 68 people and injured over 214.

Same year on September 13, six blasts took place in the national capital killing 26 people. The blasts took place in crowded markets of Karol Bagh, Connaught Place and Greater Kailash.

All these blasts save one, the German Bakery, have some common points -- all these bombs were synchronised and timed to explode within a very short span of time, crowded markets were the targets and the blasts occurred in evening when these places swell with customers.

Default Mumbaikars join hands online to help each other

Three bomb blasts struck Mumbai and resilient and resourceful citizens of the Maximum City logged online to extend a helping hand.
Twitter was flooded with tweets from people offering a ride, food, overnight stay for stranded people and blood donation. The hashtag #here2help was one of the top Twitter trends on 13 July.
An online Google Docs spreadsheet set up by Nitin Sagar from New Delhi is also being massively shared. The document titled 'Mumbai Help' lists all points of contact for help

This isn't the first time that Mumbai has found succour online in its hour of distress. During the 26 July 2005 Mumbai floods, some tech savvy Mumbaikars got together and set up a blog, mumbaihelp.blogspot.com, to help people with information during the deluge.
Twitter and other online services also served as important communication tools during the 26/11 terror attacks in 2008.
