@ 2010: What India searched for

    Google Zeitgeist India 2010
Google released its year-end Zeitgeist list for 2010. Google's annual list is an indicator of what's hot and happening in the online world. The search engine leader, each year, analyses billions of search queries to come up with the Zeitgeist - the spirit of the time.

More and more Indians are going online each year and searching for what interests them the most on Google. Here are the top trends of what Indians were looking for in the online world in 2010.

Unlike the 2008 and 2009 Zeitgeist lists Google didn't present a list of the top celebrities, instead they focussed on the fastest rising people and on top of that list was British-Indian actress Aruna Shields, who made her Bollywood debut in the Vivek Oberoi starrer Prince which was followed by Mr Singh Mrs Mehta, the that that earned notoriety for her nude scenes.

Following Aruna in the list of the fastest rising people is Bollywood's newest star-daughter-turned-actress Sonakshi Sinha who debuted opposite Salman Khan in the blockbuster of the year Dabangg.

Another Salman heroine Zarine Khan was number three on the list. Followed by the former IPL chief Lalit Modi and actress Neha Sharma whose first film was Chirutha (Telegu). Neha made her entry into Bollywood opposite Emraan Hashmi in Crook: It's Good To Be Bad

Indians have also expressed considerable interest in the Colombian singer Shakira and the long-time search engine favourite, Katrina Kaif. Completiting the top 10 list of the fastest rising people of 2010 were Sachin Tendulkar, Lady Gaga and Salman Khan.

It is interesting to note that the interest on Google search is not necessarily proportional to the box office success of a movie, else Kites would have been the highest grosser of the year by virtue of it topping the list of the most searched for movies in 2010.

Rajinikanth's Endhiran was the second most popular film on Google search in 2010, even though the super star didn't himself appear to be amongst the top 10 fastest rising people.

Dabangg was the third most popular movie of 2010 according to Google Zeitgeist followed by the much loved 3 Idiots. Other films in the most popular movies list are, Harry Potter, Ravaan, Veer, My Name is Khan, Twilight and Rajneeti.

While Nokia may be first losing its share in the smartphone market, it still manages to capture the imagination of Indians, atleast online emerging as the most popular brand of 2010

Samsung with its slew of innovative new products and much-appreciated Android phones is at number two in the most popular brands list followed by Airtel, Micromax, Dell, Maruti, Vodafone, Apple, Sony Ericsson and HP.

'How tos' are one of the things that people search for most on the Web and Indians are no different. While the most popular how to list of 2010 is similar to that of 2009 and 2008 with only the rankings varying, India might have to brace for yet another population explosion with the 'how to get pregnant' topping the list of search queries.

Indians were also eager to know how to kiss, impress a girl, improve spoken english, reduce weight, gain weight, tie a tie, create a website, make money and meditate.

The Indian mobile phone revolution is still on and Indian mobile phone makers have announced their arrival in a big way with budget devices and leading the way is "micromax mobile" which is number two on the fastest rising searches list..

Amongst the fastest rising search terms are "youtube videos", "fifa", "facebook", "cricket live score", "twitter", "way2sms", "samsung mobile", and "zedge."
