Roger Federer's poor run of form continued as he was dumped out of the Suisse Open second round by Daniel Brands on Thursday.

The top-seeded 31-year-old came into his home tournament off the back of shock second-round defeat at Wimbledon and a similarly surprising semi-final exit from the Hamburg Open, but was given even more to think about by his German opponent.

Brands dominated the pair's meeting in the final match of the day, serving 11 aces on his way to a 6-3 6-4 victory that ensured Federer would not feature in the next round of the clay-court ATP 250 competition.

Third seed Janko Tipsarevic also found himself on the wrong end of a surprise loss on Thursday as he went down 6-2 6-2 at the hands of Robin Haase.

Serbian right-hander Tipsarevic reached the final of last year's edition of the Suisse Open, but saw his campaign ended earlier this time around as he hit six double faults during a difficult one hour on court.

Meanwhile, Spain's Roberto Bautista-Agut, seeded eighth in Gstaad, was forced to retire during his clash with Romanian Victor Hanescu after picking up an injury.

Elsewhere in the men's draw, Federico Delbonis, who had sent Federer crashing out on his way to the final in Hamburg, failed to repeat his heroics against Marcel Granollers.

The Argentine was far from his best against the Spaniard and subsequently suffered a 6-2 7-5 defeat.
