Default Sanjay Leela Bhansali: End of an auteur

    “What beautiful movies he makes!”
“This guy paints a rhapsody on screen!”

If you overhear such random compliments once inside a cinema hall, strong chances are that you’re watching a Sanjay Leela Bhansali vision in motion. What SLB, the director, has achieved since he began playing with his camera could be termed no less than outstanding. Here was one guy that did not compromise on his cinema, come what may. But, how many of us could we say the same post ‘Rowdy Rathore’? My personal say: not too many.

Though, it’s not a crime, rather far from it; but when you see Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s name, out of all the people’s, during the beginning credits of Akshay Kumar’s latest movie, you have to be honest that you are taken aback for a moment. The filmmaker, who has served us dreams on the screen through ‘Khamoshi: The Musical’, ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, ‘Devdas’, ‘Black’, ‘Saawariya’ and most recently ‘Guzaarish’, is the man who has his money behind a wholesome mass entertainer ‘Rowdy Rathore’? Wow! We thought he would give his own life before promoting such cinema, let alone producing it himself. But nothing’s permanent in Bollywood, they say. We believe ‘them’ now. Wholeheartedly.

May be, money does make the world go round. And Mr. Bhansali has just come late to the party, the party which had everyone in attendance. He also wants to the join the gang, he also wants to make a ‘secure’ future for his children, he also wants to open up a posh restaurant within Bandra. And probably, he could not achieve the same through a ‘Guzaarish’, because nobody wants to see unfold a story of a paraplegic Hrithik Roshan onscreen, however honey-dripped the cinematography is; they just want to see Duggu romancing beautiful ladies alongside the beach, with his washboard abs on full display.
