Akshay Kumar's action caper Rowdy Rathore has not created any new records on release last Friday despite all the hype but the film has managed to emerge as one of the biggest grossers of the first half of 2012.

The Prabhu Deva-directed film, made at a budget of Rs. 45 crore, has earned Rs. 48.3 crore over its opening weekend in the domestic market. The overall collections including the overseas markets stands at Rs. 55.6 crore, thereby ensuring good business for its producers - Akshay, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and UTV. For Akshay, who was reeling under flops as a hero till not so long ago, this is his second consecutive hit this year after Housefull 2, which has managed to earn over Rs. 100 crore since its April release.

'The rustic touch has worked for Rowdy Rathore, although content-wise the film has nothing new. Also, this is Bollywood's first mega release after IPL and the audience was thirsting for a masala flick,' trade analyst Vajir Singh said.

Rowdy Rathore grossed Rs. 15.10 crore on its opening day. This means the film failed to eclipse the initials of Agneepath, Bollywood's biggest opener till date.

The Hrithik Roshan-Sanjay Dutt action film, which released during the Republic Day weekend, still holds the biggest opening-day record of grossing Rs. 23 crore on day one.

However, considering Agneepath released on January 26, Rowdy Rathore can claim to have scored the biggest opening during a non-holiday weekend this year.

The film released on 2,800 screens, in a bid to cash in on the fact that it primarily targeted the masses. Around 400 prints were released in the overseas market. Rowdy Rathore is said to be doing decent to lukewarm business abroad.

A day-by-day break-up of the film's collections over the first three days shows that although the film earned over Rs. 15 crore on Friday, collections dipped on day two. The film collected Rs. 14.7 crore on Saturday. However, there was a rise in collections on Sunday, with figures standing at Rs. 18.5 crore.

Incidentally, the trade is curiously waiting to find out the fate of Rowdy Rathore Monday onwards. Many of Akshay's recent films have been known to get big openings only to fizzle out by the end of the first week.

If Rowdy Rathore bucks that trend, the superstar's comeback will be complete.
