Default Govt bans duty free TV imports by air travellers

The government on Monday banned duty-free import of flat screen televisions by air travellers in a bid to prop up the rupee, which declined below the 63 level against the US dollar.

The government, according to a notification, has decided to “disallow import of flat panel (LCD/LED/Plasma) television as part of free baggage allowance” with effect from August 26. This would mean air travellers would have to pay customs duty on flat screen TVs carried as check-in baggage from August 26.

In a order to contain the Current Account Deficit (CAD) and arrest the declining value of the rupee, the government has already raised duty on gold, platinum and silver to 10 per cent.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram had said that steps would be taken to restrict import of non-essential goods.
