Parineeti Chopra takes us through her journey from being a YRF publicist to becoming the face of the banner’s prized production

How has life changed after your first film and first Filmfare award for the best debut?
A lot. In this office, where I am sitting now, I would coordinate interviews for Rani Mukerji, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma and other Yash Raj stars. I didn’t ever think of becoming an actor for the same production house. I came here as an intern and was working as a PR for a year.

Did your cousin Priyanka Chopra help you? People say that she and her family refrained from supporting you in any way…

That’s totally untrue. I stayed with them for a year. When I wanted to shift out they came with me to make sure the place was safe. I never asked for Priyanka’s help to get the job though. Even the head of publicity in YRF told me that he won’t simply hire me since I was Priyanka’s cousin.

I think I am very happy to have a sister like her. She is on my speed dial. She scolds me and tells me what to do. I follow her blindly. She has been in the industry for 10 years and knows how to handle situations. Also, she understands me. We are very similar in a lot of ways.

So, tell us about your family…
All my relatives are in the Army. My father is a businessman. He is a supplier for the Army. So, I have lived my life in Army cantonments. I spent my school days at the Ambala cantonment. My parents always supported my decisions, whether it’s acting or studies; going abroad or coming to Bombay.

    How did Ishaqzaade happen?
Normally, a producer waits for the feedback from an actor’s first film before signing him/her on for the next project. I play a brash Punjabi girl - fat, cute, badtameez ladki in Ricky Bahl. Ishaqzaade is the complete opposite. For Adi (Aditya Chopra) to have invested so much money on me means I must have something right. Ishaqzaade is an outstanding script.

When two actors debut with the same film, more often than not, they fall in love…
Arjun and I used to joke about this. Everybody used to predict that after shooting for three months, we would surely fall in love. Arjun and I would wonder, “Tera mera relationship kyun nahi hua?” We became friends.

You have been interacting with the media as a publicist and now as an actress. Are you ready to face the rumours about ‘link-ups’ - the ones that your cousin Priyanka terms ‘professional hazards’?
I understand media. I have been in PR. I know that media writes whatever the star says. There’s nothing wrong in that. The media has been misquoted. People have made the media seem like a monster.

In Ishaqzaade, there’s a scene where you are seen firing a gun. Did you learn that?
I was taught how to fire a gun desi syle. I have done a lot of stunts in the film. I have driven all kind of vehicles also. After this film, people will forget my Ricky Bahl image completely.

So, how did you manage to lose weight?
Bas paani pee pee ke. Actually, there was no diet plan as such. I was 85 kg earlier. And now, I am 60 kg. I have a weakness for pizza. I had to leave that. Other than that, I eat a lot. But I also work out.
